~About this Exhibition~
Hikoju Makie is a lacquer art group established by lacquer artist Wakamiya Takashi in 2004 from Wajima City.
The group implements various measures to ensure that Wajima lacquer art is passed down. Using the traditional division of labor system, they create works that make use of the skills of each craftsman, while nurturing highly skilled craftsmen and collaborating with different materials and industries to create demand for the next generation.
Their works that link lacquer art techniques to art have been introduced overseas, and are attracting attention in Asia and Europe.
In recognition of their activities to connect Japanese aesthetics to the future with their maki-e designs and techniques, they received the 5th Mitsui Golden Takumi Award this year.
P.S. Takashi Wakamiya, the founder of Hikoju Makie, passed away on February 28th after a long battle with illness. We would like to express our heartfelt condolences and our sincere gratitude for the kind consideration shown to us in regards to this project.
The Hikoju Makie works on display at this exhibition were created using materials such as natural wood, cloth, natural lacquer, gold powder, silver powder, and mother-of-pearl.
