漆の漆黒を出すためは和鋼が良いといわれている。また、椀木地職人は自らの道具を鍛冶するためにも和鋼を要していた。その和鋼を作り出す製法を「たたら」という。彦十蒔絵 若宮隆志は「たたら」を漆器作りにおける重要な根幹的要素とし、この椀を「たたら椀」と名付け、漆・木地・形・色、すべての要素に意匠を凝らした。
